Calf-directed affiliative behaviour of dairy cows in two types of cow-calf contact systems

چکیده

There is an interest in alternative rearing systems that allow for prolonged cow-calf contact (CCC). Yet, a better understanding of cows’ affiliative behaviour those needed. We evaluated the effect type CCC on calf-directed dairy cows. Cows were permitted to have either: i) partial (PC) with their calf; calves housed pen adjacent cow area allowing limited physical initiative dam but no suckling (n = 18), or ii) full (FC) calf including suckling; together dams free stall barn 20). Proximity and between her own recorded 0 48 h postpartum individual maternity pen, from 1 5 weeks barn. Data analysed generalized linear models, except excess zero-valued data where Kruskal Wallis test was used. Principal component analysis (PCA) carried out identify consistency After parturition, latency onset allogrooming did not differ among treatments (mean±SE, 8 ± 3 min, P 0.39). Throughout first postpartum, treatment differences found percentage observed time spent (PC: 7.7 1.3%, FC: 9.5 1.5%), standing proximity (?1 m radius) 22.9 2.1%, 21.2 2.1%), lying 30.5 4.3%, 32.5 3.2%) (P > 0.10). However, following weeks, relative PC cows, FC cows more average close (10.9 0.1% versus 3.1 0.4%, < 0.001), (2.1 0.2% 0.5 0.1%, 0.001). PCA revealed four components (explaining 76% variance). Lying far loaded (positive, negative, respectively) onto 1, whereas negatively 2. Standing 3, 1–2 near 4. Our results indicate that, comparison FC, decreases expression behaviours parturition. The set-up calf’s accessibility, could initiate as well. Nonetheless, large inter-individual lacked consistency. • Type (CCC) affects dams. Full increased compared CCC. Large present. Evaluation of Crossbred Calf and Cow Types; Subjective Traits

Data in this experiment consisted of birth weight, calving score, thickness and grade records of 600 crossbred calves. Angus, Brangus, and Gelbvieh sires were mated to purebred Hereford cows. Yearling and 2-yr-old Angus-Hereford, Brangus-Hereford, and Gelbvieh-Hereford daughters then were bred to Polled Hereford bulls (Data Set 2). Later-parity Angus-Hereford, Brangus-Hereford, and Gelbvieh-Her...

Performance and nursing behaviour of beef cows with different types of calf management.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of calf management during lactation on dam performance and nursing behaviour. Thirty-six multiparous beef cows (aged 7.5 ± 0.52 years) of Parda de Montaña breed (mean live-weight (LW) at calving 566 ± 9.3 kg) with a moderate body condition (mean 2.6 ± 0.02 on a 1 to 5 scale), were assigned to three nursing frequencies from the day after part...

Reducing Dairy Calf Mortality

The loss of dairy calves from stillbirths and disease-related deaths places a significant challenge on the producer who wants farm-specific replacement heifers to maintain or expand herd size. Stillbirths are often overlooked as an important cause of calf mortality, as they are on some dairies. With improved record keeping, data analysis, diagnostic testing and herd monitoring, the appropriate ...

Carbon flux assessment in cow-calf grazing systems.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation in grassland ecosystems are intimately linked to grazing management. This study assessed the carbon equivalent flux (Ceq) from 1) an irrigated, heavily stocked, low-density grazing system, 2) a nonirrigated, lightly stocked, high-density grazing system, and 3) a grazing-exclusion pasture site on the basis of the GHG emission...
